Croydon is London's most populous borough after Barnet, with about 390,000 residents, and has been a major commercial centre since the Middle Ages. Its skyline of 1960s office towers is now joined by new residential towers, Boxpark and a growing food and arts scene around Surrey Street Market, one of the oldest street markets in the country. East Croydon is one of the busiest stations in Britain, with trains to Victoria and London Bridge in about 15 minutes and direct services to Gatwick and Brighton. The south of the borough, around Purley, Coulsdon and Sanderstead, is green and suburban.
