How to choose a state school in London

  • Check the latest Ofsted report and the date of the inspection, not just the headline grade.
  • Look up the admissions criteria and last year's furthest distance offered, which is published by the council.
  • Visit on an open day and ask about class sizes, SEND support and after-school clubs.
  • Compare exam results and progress scores on the Department for Education "compare school performance" service.

Checks and regulation: Every state school in England is inspected by Ofsted; independent schools are inspected by Ofsted or the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI).

Frequently asked questions

When do I apply for a school place in London?

Applications for secondary school close on 31 October and for primary school on 15 January, for entry the following September. You apply through London council even if the school is in another borough.

How do I find the catchment area of a school?

Most London schools do not have fixed catchments. Places are given by criteria such as siblings and distance; check each school's admissions policy and last year's allocation data.

Can I appeal if I do not get a place?

Yes. Every parent has the right to appeal to an independent panel. You can also join waiting lists at your preferred schools.
